QQC 7/6/17 - Emily Scott

1. After reading through Yancey's article, do you all think social media should be incorporated in our ENC2135 classrooms because it is such a part of our students' writing lives? In what ways might we incorporate social media?

2. After reading through the Teacher's Guide Part II, which do you think is more beneficial for our ENC2135 students, Project-by-Project grading or grading a student's final portfolio of work? Why?

  1. In response to your question about social media in the classroom, I think it really depends on how much trust we're willing to extend to our students. For younger learners, I'm not sure if the benefits outweigh the potential for distraction. However, I do believe getting students to think about Facebook posts and Tweets as literary genres might make them more engaged. Perhaps allowing students to summarize class discussions using Facebook and Instagram posts might help them better synthesize the material.

  2. Remembering how I felt as an undergraduate, I prefer grading project by project. This is a way that I can self monitor myself as to how well I am doing in the class. It really unnerved me to have only one or two grades in a class for the entire semester. I felt as if I had no way to improve or do better. But that is my opinion.
