1) Sommers discusses how writing/writing processes are linked with speech, and she goes on to quote Barthes when he says "writing begins at the point where speech becomes impossible," which I think is fascinating but seems to imply that they are wholly different. I feel like speech necessarily precedes writing, and that they must work together to convey the writer's ideas. Do you think there is such a gulf between writing and speech, or do you think the two are more intrinsically linked and play off of one another?
2)Both Sommers and Bishop discuss the need for a "revision vision,"or the ability to "see" and "hear" whilst revising. This seems to encompass the ability to look over the piece with fresh eyes, the ability to discover and play with argumentation based on audience, to come to an understanding of the self as a writer (in terms of the specific piece and generally). How might you introduce this vision to students? Did any of Bishops suggestions really stand out to you? Why?
